Happy Christmas from Tucson
Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 4:55PM
Tobin and I just got back from spending Christmas week in Tucson with his mom and brother.
Since we were there for the entire week without many plans but to hang around the house and relax, I brought Lacey and about a pound and a half of fiber along with me.

Lacey and I were insanely productive. While Tobin taught his mom how to use her new iPhone, and how to use Gmail and replaced her air filters and fixed her kegerator, Lacey and I spun through an entire pound of various fibers. In the foreground, you can see 4 ounces of BFL spun into a fingering weight, in the color "Damson". Once it's washed and set, I'll post some close-up shots. Hanging from the orifice is a chunk of Brown Sheep Superwash in "Hey There, Cupcake!"
Here's some "Hey There, Cupcake!" on the bobbin, spun into a worsted 2-ply:

It started out like this:

Fluffy chocolate with pink and blue icing. The name just struck me. Silly, I know, but that's really so much of the fun of creating colorways.
When I wasn't spinning, of course I was knitting. I got quite a ways done on my Embossed Leaves socks:

I'm knitting these on size 2.25mm needles (not the 2.75mm called for in the pattern. Mona Schmidt must knit SUPER tight or I knit insanely loosely, because my gauge is right on the money), using Dream in Color Smooshy in "Chinatown Apple". This yarn had been specially purchased at Stitches West last year for Cookie A's Mingus socks, but the autumn-y color just wanted to be apple leaves instead. I love these socks very much, and for once I'm keeping them for myself.
Both Damson and Hey, There Cupcake! handspun yarns will end up in the shop as soon as it opens. We're looking at t-minus only a few days now! Stay tuned for the big opening!

So the Apple Leaf sock pattern totally didn't impress me when I saw it in Favorite Socks... but maybe it's because the model pictures are all in pastels and I like your choice of something pretty and warm and autumny better. (One thing I miss about autumn in Minnesota -- Apple Picking).
I'm drooling over the Damson handspun. (Me love something purple? Never...)
