Project Spectrum, and a Small Shop Update

This week's Shop Update is a small one, but it means a lot to me. I worked like crazy all week and, disappointingly, don't have much to show you today. Such is the life of a perfectionist. I have two skeins of my new laceweight rinsing now -- they initially came out not QUITE the colors I envisioned, so I gave them each another dunk in the dyepot and hope they'll be perfect now. Look for another unscheduled shop update this weekend!
What I do have to show you marks my first foray into the world of Project Spectrum. March 1st marked the beginning of the 4th cycle of Project Spectrum.
I've never participated before, but decided it would be an incredible way to challenge myself creatively. I find myself returning to the same colors again and again. While I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with that, I do realize that the flip side of returning to the same colors repeatedly is that I avoid the same colors repeatedly as well. It's going to be interesting to push myself out of my creative comfort zone and see what happens.
I love this cycle's theme: combining a thematic color with an associated season, material and element. March and April explore the color green, with the materials stones, rocks, and gems, and the winter season.
To give myself a little shove in the right direction, I ran outside during a break in the rain we've been having this week, and snapped a few pictures in the garden with my Canon Rebel Xsi (a gift from my fantastic husband and my new favorite toy that isn't directly related to yarn).
It's amazing how much I saw in the 10-foot space outside my front door, in the five minutes I had before it started pouring again.
I was thrilled to see that the wisteria we planted last fall, and that I thought I had killed with my neglectful black-death thumb, had only been hibernating and was getting ready to bloom.
The magnolia tree has been going crazy for weeks.
And the rain has been encouraging bright green moss to grow in our Japanese rock garden.
I love the contrast of the fuzzy, velvety patches of moss growing against the rough, grey-brown texture of the rock.
It was the moss-covered rocks that provided the inspiration for this week's Marzipan Merino.
The moss covered rocks in my front garden struck me with the intense depth and dimension of grays and greens. I was excited to see what new colors I would find in the juxtaposition of olive, forest, charcoal and dove. I found umber and ochre, and even some green apple.
I'm thrilled and surprised by this colorway. It's deeper, darker and more somber than most of my colors. It's really quite masculine. The only other color I have right now that I'd consider masculine is Panforte. I should work on that. :)
The mossy organic forest-woodness of this color would make an incredible leaf-themed shawl. Something like the Woodland Shawl, perhaps?
